Seeking to simplify his life after the snowplow accident that nearly took his life last year, actor Jeremy Renner is listing his Los Angeles home for $12.9 million.
The Oscar-nominated actor purchased the 1960s-era house for around $4 million in 2012, according to property records.
Situated in a tranquil area near Laurel Canyon, the approximately 9,000-square-foot home features six bedrooms, a screening room, a music studio, and an open-plan living room with a bar area. Sliding doors lead to the pool, which includes waterfall features.
Renner, 53, known for his role as Hawkeye in Marvel’s “Avengers” films and for movies like “The Hurt Locker,” mentioned that while he is also a real estate investor and flipper, the property near Laurel Canyon was his personal residence.
When he purchased the house, Renner had just wrapped up a five-year stint of filming and was looking for a personal retreat. He found the low-slung bungalow architecturally appealing and fell in love with the neighborhood, where only a few houses are located, and some residents had lived there since childhood.
“You don’t usually experience a lot of neighborly warmth in Los Angeles,” he remarked. “This was a fantastic little micro-community.”
When he acquired the house, it was much smaller and in good condition but required updates. The home featured “all these little Star Trek-looking buttons” and equipment for playing cassettes and records—“all the stuff that was cool and high-tech in the ’60s,” he said.
Renner invested about $5.5 million to renovate and expand the property, more than doubling its size while preserving its original Midcentury style. As a musician and songwriter, he added a music studio to the home. The sloped lot was regraded to create more usable outdoor space, and he installed solar panels that provide approximately 90% of the house’s energy needs.
“I did all that because I intended to stay there,” he explained. “It was meant to be a forever home.”
Originally from Northern California, Renner said he grew up poor. As a rising actor, he earned “good money” rehabbing and flipping neglected homes in Los Angeles, sometimes living on-site without electricity or running water. “We had a porta-potty there,” he noted.
Having flipped more than 20 homes, Renner favors properties with unique design or rich history. He avoids contemporary architecture, which he finds “cold and kind of lifeless,” preferring homes that “reek of California.”
Renner, who is divorced, mentioned that his main residence has long been in Nevada near Lake Tahoe, but the L.A. property has enabled him to spend time with his daughter, who attends school there.
In January 2023, he was run over by a snowplow, sustaining over 30 broken bones and undergoing multiple surgeries. He spent much of his recovery in the single-story L.A. house, which was convenient because it didn’t have stairs. He has used the studio to record songs inspired by the accident.
He is selling the property to downsize and concentrate on his recovery, he explained.
“I need to move on to other things,” he added.
Renner has just finished filming the latest season of his TV series, “Mayor of Kingstown,” and now intends to work on a book about his near-death experience and recovery.
