Canadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has listed his Los Angeles home, where he and his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, have lived since 2016, for $2.2 million. The couple originally purchased the storybook-style cottage for $1.45 million. Wainwright, who released his latest album, Folkocracy, in June 2023, shared the news on Instagram.
“The time has come…Jörn and I are listing our gorgeous Laurel Canyon home,” Wainwright wrote. “We have lived in this house since 2016. I wrote ‘Unfollow The Rules’ here, including one of my favorite pieces, ‘Peaceful Afternoon.’ We have had many peaceful afternoons here and I hope that the next owners enjoy it as much as we did.”
Built in 1926, the whimsical home features three bedrooms and four bathrooms, with original elements such as dramatic wood-beamed cathedral ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a vintage-tiled fireplace. Highlights include an octagon-shaped library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a bright yellow formal dining room with diamond-paned windows, multiple balconies, and a sky-blue kitchen with a built-in breakfast nook. The enchanting outdoor space includes a tree-dotted garden, an alfresco dining area, a patio, a pond, and a “lovers bridge.”
Dag Eliason and Alexandre Anu of The Agency, who are handling the sale, noted that Wainwright’s departure will be felt in the local community. Eliason mentioned that neighbors often heard piano music coming from the terrace on warm summer nights. “It’s a very inspirational house,” Anu said. “For Rufus, as a songwriter, he wanted a place he could pull inspiration from.”
Wainwright assured his followers that he will remain in Los Angeles, noting that he, his husband, their 12-year-old daughter, and their dog will continue to explore new areas within the city.
