Living in Hawaii means having a sun-drenched beach as your backyard, and it doesn’t get much better than that.
In Kailua, on O’ahu’s east coast, a tropical compound has been listed for $32.5 million by Brandon Kim of List Sotheby’s International Realty. Built in 2001, this oceanfront estate was once owned by Harry Rothschild of the Rothschild banking family, who sold the property in 1987 for a then-bargain price of $1.2 million. Rothschild, who passed away in 2015 in Honolulu, named the estate Kai Moena, or The House of the Resting Sea.
The nearly 1.4-acre oceanfront property includes two subdivided parcels with close to 15,000 square feet of living space. The compound offers 10 bedrooms and eight full bathrooms, plus three powder rooms, spread across two homes. With over 255 feet of beachfront, the property ensures easy access to the sand. The homes feature soaring vaulted ceilings, natural flagstone flooring, and traditional Hawaiian design elements, including rich tropical mahogany and bamboo.
The luxurious estate offers numerous amenities. “It’s like your own mini Four Seasons Resort,” Kim told Mansion Global. Highlights include a lagoon-style pool with cascading waterfalls, a private fitness center, a massage room, a dry sauna, and a movie theater. For those who enjoy being active, there’s also an oceanfront tennis court.
Hawaii has become a prime destination for A-listers and wealthy buyers. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is developing a $270 million survivalist-style compound in Kauai, dubbed Koolau Ranch, with $170 million already spent on land and plans to invest another $100 million in construction. The estate will feature two homes, a secret tunnel to a bunker, a gym, multiple pools, and 11 treehouses.
Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey is one of Maui’s largest landowners. Last year, she expanded her real estate holdings by purchasing 870 acres in Kula for $6.6 million, adding to the more than 100 acres she already owned. The property, a former equestrian ranch, is now where Winfrey grows her own fresh fruits and vegetables.
