Where is Puerto Escondido?

Puerto Escondido is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, specifically in the state of Oaxaca. It sits approximately 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) southeast of the state capital, Oaxaca City. The town is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and excellent surfing opportunities.

When to travel to Puerto Escondido?

The best time to visit Puerto Escondido is when there aren’t as many tourists around and the weather is great. In our opinion, the winter months from December to April is the best time frame to visit Puerto Escondido.

The climate doesn’t vary much year-round, being mostly humid and hot on average. The busiest months are from January to March, as well as June so if you want fewer crowds it’s best to avoid these months.

How to get to Puerto Escondido?

The best way to get to Puerto Escondido is via plane and depending on where you’re flying from you can pick up a flight for as cheap as $40 USD.

The airport is very small and currently, the only destinations where you can fly to Puerto Escondido are Mexico City and Guadalajara.

The other option is to get here via bus from Oaxaca City, which has many more flight connections than Puerto Escondido, however, it takes around six and a half hours to drive.

Getting Around in Puerto Escondido

While Uber isn’t available in Puerto Escondido, taxis are plentiful and can be found throughout the town. Additionally, Didi operates in Puerto Escondido, although finding a driver may be more challenging compared to larger cities. However, during our stay, we were unable to locate a Didi driver.

For travelers seeking an efficient and cost-effective way to explore Puerto Escondido, renting a scooter is highly recommended. Scooter rentals are readily available and typically cost around $20 USD per day, making it an affordable option for getting around town and exploring nearby attractions. With the freedom to zip through traffic and explore narrow streets, scooters offer a convenient and enjoyable way to navigate Puerto Escondido.

For budget-conscious travelers, colectivo hop-on and hop-off trucks offer an affordable transportation option in Puerto Escondido. These trucks traverse the city’s streets, providing convenient rides for only 10 Pesos per trip. Given that Puerto Escondido is quite spread out, with Centro to La Punta being approximately a 50-minute walk on foot, relying on colectivos can save both time and energy.

Walking long distances in Puerto Escondido may not be the most practical choice due to the town’s sprawling layout. Therefore, opting for the inexpensive colectivo service ensures you can efficiently explore the city without breaking the bank.
