Nearly three decades after John Denver’s voice fell silent, a piece of the late singer-songwriter’s creative legacy is once again changing hands. A former guest house and music studio on Denver’s storied Starwood estate in Aspen, Colorado, has hit the market for $8.495 million, offering buyers a rare opportunity to own a home steeped in American music history.
Set on five acres in one of Aspen’s most exclusive gated communities, the residence was once part of Denver’s personal compound—immortalized in his 1971 song “Starwood in Aspen.” According to information reviewed by californialuxuryhouses, the property was separated from the original main house in 2016, when the larger estate was sold.
A Legacy Rooted in Aspen’s Most Private Enclave
Starwood remains one of the only fully gated residential communities in Aspen, offering 24/7 security and sweeping views of the Roaring Fork Valley. The enclave’s origins are closely tied to Denver himself, who helped fund its early infrastructure and lived there from the early 1970s until his death in 1997.
“Starwood has always attracted residents who value privacy as much as scenery,” listing agent P.J. Bory of Christie’s International Real Estate Aspen Snowmass told californialuxuryhouses. “Very few properties here come with this level of cultural significance.”
The home sits just 10 to 12 minutes from downtown Aspen, yet feels worlds away—surrounded by open land and panoramic views stretching from Aspen to Snowmass, including all four of the area’s ski mountains.

Because the structure originally functioned as a guest house and studio—not Denver’s primary residence—it lacked a proper kitchen. A modern kitchen was added, seamlessly connecting to the open-plan dining and living areas.
Preserving the Spirit of John Denver
Despite the upgrades, many original elements remain intact. Exposed wood beams, vintage tile in several bathrooms, and a stained-glass partition salvaged from Denver’s former main house all survived the renovation.
“That was always the seller’s philosophy,” Bory told californialuxuryhouses. “He’s a fan, and he wanted to embrace the spirit of John Denver and the original design, rather than overwrite it.”
Additional enhancements include a newly built deck oriented toward the valley, a hot tub, and a complete overhaul of the landscaping, which had become overgrown with scrub oak over the years.
Flexible Layout With Expansion Potential
The property consists of two structures totaling 2,912 square feet. The main residence includes three bedrooms, while the former garage and guest house—once Denver’s music studio—offers two additional bedrooms.
Beyond its current footprint, the home also provides a notable development advantage. Under existing zoning allowances, the next owner may expand the residence up to 5,750 square feet without purchasing additional development rights—a rare and valuable option in Aspen.
“That flexibility alone makes this property incredibly compelling,” Bory said. “You can live in it as-is, or thoughtfully expand while maintaining the integrity of the site.”

While the identity of the current seller was not disclosed, californialuxuryhouses attempted to reach the owner for comment regarding the renovation process but did not receive a response prior to publication.
Even without its famous former owner, the home’s greatest asset may be its sense of place—combining privacy, history, and unobstructed mountain views in a way few Aspen properties can match.
